aside from my children, i like to keep pictures of just about every student i have at the end of the semester, but some people, even students feel I´ll do something shady with them. i earn their trust and respect (i think ) through the school year, but still some people are a little uneasy about it

You take pictures of your students...doing what?

I'm the worlds worse with names.. If I was a teacher, I would take pictures of my students and write their names on the back of the pictures and use them as flash cards to memorize who they are. In a university setting when the classes are much bigger, the difficulty of keeping people straight would be a challenge. I would take pictures and not think twice about it. In the event that one of my students became famous, then I would at least have proof that I knew them when.....

Technically, if the students are minors, then you are obligated to get a signed release from their parents agreeing to the photographs and stating your purpose for taking them. The release should also include information about what is going to be done with the pictures. No release? Don't take photos of your students.

If the students are NOT minors, then they are allowed to either consent or not consent to having their photograph taken. If this is at a college or university, you should contact your department chair and ask what the policy is regarding photographic images. Some universities obtain a general release for photographs of students when a student enrolls - in which case you're covered.

In either case, you REALLY need to be sure you know what you're doing BEFORE you do it, particularly if some students have stated that they are uncomfortable about the photographs. Make sure that you know the rules pertaining to photographs and that you are operating within your school's policies. If you step outside of those policies and a student or a parent sues you, the school will leave you to twist.

If you're in doubt, ASK the administration, and get their response in writing so that you don't get caught twisting if there's a problem.

You should only be allowed to take their picture with their consent, and their parent's consent if they are under the age of 18. I understand it may be an innocent thing of just being a way to remember them, but you know there are so many creeps, you are pretty much asking for trouble, and a lawsuit from a member of your class of the opposite (or same) sex and their family. Just being accused is enough to ruin your teaching career. Why not ask the students for pictures of themselves as a donation, explain why, and if you don't get them all, I'm sorry. Just buy a yearbook every year.

When I was in school, our classes would have a class portrait day. The photographs taken were of the entire class as a whole, and not of each individual student. If it is a group photo, I don't see a problem. As long as the photographs are not shown on the internet; as both parents & students may protest in defense of their privacy rights.

If it were me, I would be a bit uneasy about it. However, that's because of past personal experiences. Your intentions may be completely innocent, but it all depends on the person.

What age are your students? I take pictures of my seventh graders all the time--they love it. I post pictures with their work around the room. I also use the thumbnails for seating charts, which the substitutes love. Are you taking candids? Or are you asking them to do something that makes them uncomfortable?

Its a shame that this world has come to that frame of mind. I can understand why you would want pictures of your students. They are special to you. I am certain that things would have been completely different 50+ years ago.

if the parents and students both are uneasy about it then I wouldn't do it, why don't you just get the year books at the end of each year???
