I would like to know because it seems like sometimes last year's songs get nominated for this years show (i.e. 2005 songs nominated for 2007 show.) I went to the Grammy website but I couldn't understand it the way they explained. Plus songs that just came out like a week before the nominations get nominated. I don't understand it.

The grammy eligiblity year is as stated on their official website. Oct 1st of last year to Sept 1st of this year. Sometimes though, you may realize that some songs are way too old or way too new to be nominated. This is not always the case, becuase in order to be be nominated, as quoted from the official site F.A.Q "...Recordings must be in general distribution in the United States, i.e. sales by label to a branch or recognized independent distributor, via the Internet, or mail order/retail sales for a nationally marketed product..."

That means you may hear a song or see the video of a single, but really, the label won't release the song for general distributions UNTIL the eligibility period.

With that being said, it can work both ways. Songs may be released BEFORE the video or radio release comes along.

Case and point, Christina Aguilera "Candyman". Which is one of the highlights of her latest album. This song has been out almost the same time as the Back 2 Basic CD came out in the Summer of 2006. But it never has been officially released. I read somewhere it would be in February 2007. Along with video and a radio release date. So although it won't be qualified for the 2007 grammy awards, it may be in 2008.

Overall this is nowhere near unusual. Since record labels do this all the time. So even though it may look as the songs the grammy nominated are "old songs". Technically, most don't go further back than 2 years ago.
