I agree with dalerule. Canvas that has been treated is the best, and it won't mildew or tear as easy as most fabrics will, plus it is waterproofed.

If you go to your local fabric store, they can direct you to fabrics which have been treated to be outdoor fabrics... they can be used for anything outdoors, most are water repellant...and best of all.. the colors wont fade in the sun. A general fabric which is also great to use and EXTREEMLY cheap.. is painters canvas! You can buy it at home depot/lowes... whats nice about it is that it has a natural feel, it can be bleached without damaging the fabric, and it is cheaper than anything else you will find per yard. By sewing tabs along the top, and hanging them on rods.. you make it simple to pull them down at any time and wash them, and the off white color works well with any decor.

If it's to shield rain, sun, etc., I would get Sunbrella fabric or similar. If it's just for decoration, anything that won't mildew or get moldy, or at least that can be washed in bleach, should be fine.

I WOULD RECOMMEND A TREATED CANVAS. THIS MAY BE PURCHASED AT AN AWNING COMPANY.
