SchaeffersResearch.com has another take. It gives number of shares short but also it states short interest as days worth of average volume. In other words, you can type in a share. If you want percent you can calculate # of shares / shares out. However, I like the number of days to unwind because it really shows the impact a short squeeze might have.

For example, I just went to schaeffersresearch.com. I put RGLD in the quote and clicked. Then I clicked on 'sentiment brief'. Near the bottom I find it is short interest is 4.3 million and change. I also find that it has SIR of 10.62, pretty heavy. 10.62 days of average volume to unwind. They give a definition of SIR if you go to 'education' and then 'glossary' and go down to short interest ratio.

You want to find out what the short interest in the stock is and then divide by shares outstanding. Each exchange maintains this data. See the link below for the NYSE.
