GPA is the acronym for Grade Point Average. There are at least 3 different ways to calculate this.

The most common method of calculating GPA is with the four point system. Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each of your grades by its credit value then dividing by the total number of credits you have.

F=0, D=1, C=2, B=3, and A=4.

So, if you take the following two classes:
Biology worth 5 credits and you earn an A, and
Calculus worth 3 credits and you earn a C
Then this is how to calculate the GPA:
((5x3)+(3x4))/8= 3.375 GPA

Some schools actually use a five point system instead of a four point system. In that case, a student earns a 5 instead of a 4 for any course in which his/her score is perfect.

Grade Point Average. Each letter grade has a number of points assigned to it. Generally, A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0. They are averaged together and that makes your GPA.

For example, if you made 2 A's, a B, and 2 C's, that would be 4+4+3+2+2=15/5=3.0

You'd have a B average.
