I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer. The temperature dial actually snapped off one day. The dial isnt broken but the rod it was connected to did and wont budge, even with plyers. I was told I could fix it myself but Im wondering what caused the dial to stop turning and also is it easier to do it myself or pay the dealer to do it for me

Pay the dealer. If you have to replace the temp control you will have to disassemble part of the dash board. That is a job not for ammeteurs.
