Only if it points down and has a goat head inside, that is the symbol of the prince of darkness.

Cando, Draco most of the others are correct. I only add that an upright Pentagram is considered the sign of White Magick or White Magic (the good guys). However, there is a concept of a star in rotation, meaning a dynamic good pentagram, and it can be depicted as an inverted pentagram at times. This is usually designated with specific symbols to prove it's goodness (like the Eastern Star's sign -- it's a complex Masonic theme, so we'll leave it at that.) This is not evil.

The goat's head rules apply to Satanism, although there really is nothing evil about Goats. Except when they eat your garden.

There are many books that address these issues, and some are very bad and misleading. Mouni Saddhu is fairly sane, and so is anything written by Israel Regardie.

This pentagram myth is pervasive, along with a misunderstanding that paganism and Wicca are in anyway linked to Satan worship.

Ok, here goes with the longest story ever told to answer a simple question. Pentagrams pre-date satanism. They represent the four elements and the soul in their points. They were used by ancient celts before satanists (which, by the way, are a fairly recent brand-name) ever thought of existing and perverting the ancient ways. Magic has a right hand (or path of light) and a left hand (or path of darkness). That is the way it has always been, even before the 'new agers' started spelling it magick. About the time of Alistair Crowley, 'satanists' were born. It was also about that time that people saw the 'goat head' in the inverted pentagram. If you consider how much money that man made, it was a pretty good marketing ploy. Love will protect you from almost everything, including mercenaries, dear. It is the strongest magic I know. I don't mean it has to be romantic love. Did you ever watch a mother, who is usually shy and quiet protect her child? Ever seen a mother bear and her cub? It's about the same amount of power. Sorry for the long answer, but hopefully your spirit is still enough now to listen to the truth and not worry so much about what other people say.

A pentagram is a 5-point star, often inside a circle. It means different things to different people.

In the middle ages, it was used by Christians as a symbol for Christ's holy wounds: hands, feet, and crown. Medieval occultists associated it with Venus, and sometimes believed each point was connected to a different astrological planet.

>> Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and others, recognized the letters
>> as being the five beginning letters of the words: udor (water),
>> ge (earth), idea (idea, as in the Platonic Idea), eile (heat), and
>> aer (air).
So that's the origin of the pentagram as a symbol for earth, air, fire, water and spirit. (Roughly.)

Five has always been a number associated with mankind, with the trait of being human:
>> We have five fingers/toes on each limb extremity.
>> We commonly note five senses - sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste.
>> We perceive five stages or initiations in our lives - eg. birth, adolescence, coitus, parenthood and death.

Pentagrams have been associated with Christianity, Islam, Wicca, and Satanism at different times, for various reasons. The symbol *itself* doesn't "mean" Satanism, any more than it "means" Christ's wounds. That's an interpretation people put on it.

Point-up and point-down pentagrams--same story. Some groups claim they mean something specific and different, and others don't.

This history of the pentagram is long a varied.

This particular symbolism has persisted for centuries, and has greatly influenced theologies of diverse traditions. Early Christians wore it as an emblem, possibly to represent the wounds of Christ, or possibly due to connections between early Christians and the Pythagorean mysteries.* Later, the pentacle was important to many doctrines of esoteric Medieval and Renaissance belief systems- alchemy, kabbalah, and Ceremonial magick.

The meaning of the pentagram symbol may have more to do with the experience of the person looking at the symbol, and the use of the symbol.

Well there are lots of interpretations. Almost all religions have similar or same pentagon shaped artifacts.

I remember reading somewhere that it is actually the path of one of the stars closer to earth. I think the book's name is 'Chariots of the gods'.

This link is a good read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagram

No. It's a misconception that it is a symbol of Satan. Your first information was correct- it represents the five elements, and is completely benevolent and deals with good energies.
