It really depends on the person. I personally take paroxetine, the generic equivalent of Paxil, and I have had ups and downs with it. Generally, it seems to have helped me be better able to function socially, with much less anxiety. It also lessens my obsessive compulsive tendencies, and decreases the amount of depressing thoughts I have.

One thing that you absolutely need to know is that if you DO start taking Paxil/paroxetine, it is incredibly difficult to stop taking. If you miss a dose for more than a day or two, you will notice. Missing doses can have very adverse side effects, such as becoming more depressed than ever, suicidal thoughts, and generally being very short-tempered. Things that would simply roll off your back would be infuriating.

If you take it normally as a routine, it generally will not negatively affect you, in my experience. Sometimes you may get the feeling "I hate that I have to take this drug/medicine to feel 'normal,'" but that eventually goes away with time and experience.

Above all, you would need to speak with a suitable doctor about whether or not you should take Paxil/paroxetine. A psychiatrist would best be able to discuss this with you, or perhaps a family doctor, if you've had one for at least a few years.

*Edit* In reply to Frogmama's post, Paxil is NOT something you should just "try and see how if affects you." You have to start taking it gradually, starting with small doses and working up to your desired/recommended dose. Again, you would need to discuss this with a doctor you know/knows you, or a psychiatrist. Note that a psychiatrist is not exactly the same as a psychologist; the 'ologist does not have the same academic degree in actual medicine that the 'iatrist.

Paxil was one of those drugs that did NOT work for me. In fact, after Paxil and my experience I swore off any drug in it's class for the remainder of my life. It made me feel violent, angry and downright crazy! For those who do well on it, it can be a wonder drug. It's one of those things where you just have to try it and see how it works with your chemistry.

i myself hated Paxil whilst i replaced into on it. It gave me terrible tremor and made me ill to my abdomen. i replaced into on it for 4 years before I give up chilly turkey with the aid of fact i could no longer take it anymore. Now i'm on Celexa and that i hardly have any side consequences. it incredibly is large.

Not every drug works for every person as we all know.
You just have to give it a try & see how it helps you.
