i've heard everyone say there's a big gathering on the embarcadero, but is there a specific place? is everyone going to be just hanging out and walking around all night, or what? also, is there anywhere else to hang out in the city for new years??

Usually folks who go to the Embarcadero hang in front of the Ferry Building. Basically people walking around and sometimes they have live entertainment and fireworks.
Others wander towards The Castro. If you want to party (and are old enough) that's a cool place to go but the police are being extra vigillent up there this year because of the shootings on Halloween. So whatever you decide to do, Be Safe! Happy New Year!

Fine Restaurants. Big Hotels. Starbucks. San Francisco can also be pretty dull and boring.

anyplace downtown is where to be. where a jacket bring some champagne and be ready to party.
other places? I dunno.
