If you feel like you're skating poorer than usual, it usually means that you need to get your skates sharpened or that you forgot your daily cup of cappuccino.

If you are skating in games on an indoor rink, I would estimate that you need to get them sharpened after every two games or so; if you're skating just for fun between games, just sharpen them before your next game.

If you're skating on pond ice, they need to be sharpened much more often. The grains of sand and debris in pond ice wears away at the blades very, very quickly.

I was never too picky about having my skates sharpened (probably because I was never very good...ha ha), but it really does make a big difference. I suppose this also depends on how much you want to excel at hockey. If it's not absolutely necessary that you skate perfectly, then it's not worth the money and wait to sharpen them constantly. As soon as you start feeling excessively clumsy though, get them sharpened and get your cappuccino!

as a rule unless you play at a very competitive level you should get them sharpened every 2 hours of skating which is about every 4-5 games unless you have a lot of money then do em after every skate the sharper the better

how heavy are you? i'm guessing you're new to hockey. it won't matter much to you until you're able to skate hard. sharpen them about every third or fourth time you're on the ice until then.

when they lose thier shine and they get rusty get them sharpened.
always wipe them down after you use them to prevent rust,
a good test is to stand on the ice and try dragging your feet side to side horizontally ans see if they catch the edge, if your skate slides right across without cathing an edge, get them sharpened..
I would do it generally once every couple of weeks if youre using them alot.

Every two hours for very competive skating. Every eight for recreational skating. You'll know when you're overdue for a sharping because you won't be performing manuvers as well and feel like you're struggling with your movements.

Every 3 or 4 games... as soon as you feel that the skates don't have a grip anymore, then it's about time....
