If you smoke you baby breathes in the same chemicals as you. Even if you smoke outside the home, the chemicals are in your clothes, and studies prove that babies end up with these toxic, cancer causing chemicals in their blood just from coming into contact with them on your clothes, or in your hair, or on your skin.

If it can effect them so greatly, in such small quantities as just being on your clothes, imagine how it effects your child if you smoke in the home.

Its the most selfish, careless thing a parent can do, to risk and long term, life long health of their child for a habit they refuse to quit. Its not any different than getting drunk and becoming physically or emotionally abusive. Your selfish habit will effect your child for life.

Nicotine, and the other chemicals in tabacco are in your blood stream when you smoke, and therefore tranferred to your breast milk, and ingested by the baby.

There are no rules, but there should be laws against it.

There are no myths, only those the tabcco companies would have you believe. I work for phillip morris. :) If you cant beat them, inflitrate.

Wow, you ask a simple question and you get a lecture. We are all adults here and we all know the cons of smoking. Geesh people, give her a break.

Anyway, Yes, you can still smoke and breastfeed. Just make sure to smoke AFTER you nurse.

Most importantly, don't smoke in your home or car. Your baby will be just fine.

I wouldn't but then again I stopped smoking as soon as I found out I was pregnant. The chemicals found in your cigarettes are carried through into your breast milk and baby will drink them. Not good idea. I also suggest not smoking in your home if you choose to do so. My dr. always told me this when I was pregnant - if you question it's safety it's probably not safe. If you have to think twice then you shouldn't do it.

I've always heard/been told by doctors and LLL leaders, smoking (in moderation) and nursing is better than not smoking and formula, b/c breastfeeding has so many benefits and the amount of nicotine in breastmilk is tiny. However, this is some new information (hope the link works):

Yes, you can still breastfeed. It is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed. Breastfeeding can help to counter some of the potential negative effects of mom being a smoker. (Although mom not smoking is obviously the best option.)

really the only "rule" is to be sure to feed the baby when he's hungry. If you smoke, please don't do it in the same room with the baby, outside is even better, babies can be harmed by breathing smoke. I won't lecture you about smoking being bad, because we all know it is, and I smoke too. Just please have consideration for the baby's health, and remember, breastmilk from a smoking mom is still way better than chemical formula.

im not gonna lecture you about smoking, i do it enough about my parents. and ive already decided to put in my will that if i die of lung cancer that has to do with second hand smoke that i want someone to sue my parents to help take care of my kids, idont care if it sounds bad. i didnt make the decision for them to smoke all my life and around me. and ive never smoked and im not gonna. (its too nasty to me and even the smell makes me nauseas) but if u breastfeed while u are smoking. its very unhealthy for ur child, smoking at all around ur children is a bad idea. second hand smoke is terrible for kids. it causes breathing problems and many illnesses. my brother has asthma and i have had several cases of bad bronchitis. most of the people who already answered. said pretty much the same thing as i say..but i just want to reinforce that smoking while breastfeeding is very unhealthy for ur child

This is what a doctor told me whatever I put into my body is what my baby will be getting. I would assume that means smoking also. The tar and all could be carried in your breast milk.

Yes you can smoke and breastfeed (but not at the same time--I wouldn't smoke around the baby).
Google: Breastfeeding your child effectively. There is an article about breastfeeding myths.

If you want to kill yourself early, dont do the same to your baby. You shouldnt be smoking with a baby around, their lungs are so fragile.
