Everything in the universe that has mass can be converted to an equivalent amount of energy by multiplying its mass by the speed of light squared.

So if you weigh 50kg, (110 pounds), and you could be converted to pure energy, the amount of energy that would be produced would be:

E = mc² = (50 kg)(3.0 x 10^8 m/s)² = 4.5 x 10^18 Joules

Just for fun, I found a number for the entire energy consumption for America in the year 1997: 43.6788 x 10^9 Joules.

So just converting a person with a mass of 50kg into pure energy would produce enough energy to power the entire USA for about 1 billion (10^9) years.

This is Einstein's famous equation. e is energy, m is mass & c is the speed of light. It means that by destroying a very small amount of mass, you can get a lot of energy. It is the basis for nuclear weapons, nuclear reactors & every star including our sun.

e=energy
m=mass
c=speed of light
2=squared

If you convert mass into energy, you will get a *lot* of energy. This is how nuclear weapons work- they turn one kind of atom into other atoms, thus creating energy.
