Usually, I love to write especially poems and other forms of creative writing. However, I now find myself trying to avoid having to write...particulary when it comes to college apps. How can warm-up myself and get myself back into writing? When I do get back into it...will I be a better or worse writer?

First, why don't you want to write anymore? If you can identify what made you unable to write or not want to write, then that's the first step to being able to write again. Is it stress over college admissions? (If so, that might be the makings of another question!)

Next, just start writing. Get yourself a notebook (or cozy up with your computer if that's how you write) and start writing about whatever comes to mind. Getting words on paper is the first step--even if those words are absolute crap! At least it gets you started.

I don't think this break in your writing will adversely affect your skill. You might be a little rusty at the beginning, but that will pass.

Good luck!

I believe that Hemingway wouldn't allow himself a drink if he didn't write a certain amount each day. It didn't matter what he wrote, what the quality was, or if it was from a piece he was working on. He just had to write.

Try to find some writing prompts (Writer's Digest is a good place to look) and work on getting 500 words down for a prompt before beginning any real work. It should help the creative juices start flowing a little more easily.

Just start writing. I will do this all the time, especially when I think I don't have anything to write about. I open a new Word document and just start typing. Usually the beginning goes something like, "I have nothing to write about. Life is so boring. I feel like some monster got into my head and gobbled up all my good ideas." Write about how bad it feels to be "blocked," to feel blank and bland and uninspired...and I'll bet you that sooner or later, something will surface to spark your imagination. You'll go, "Ooh!" and next thing you know, you'll be off.

The best way to overcome "writer's block" is to write through it. Writing when you feel bad, when you distrust your skills, your abilities, your ideas, or what have you, not only has enormous therapeutic value, but it is almost always guaranteed to unblock you. The only way to fail at writing is to stop writing...so DON'T STOP!

Good luck.

Sometimes you have to go with the writer's block until you find inspiration. I've been there many a times.

If you're looking for warm ups though, try brainstorming. Come up with a who what when where why (and how). Whatever randomness hits the brain.

There's no perfect solution to writer's block as all writers go through it at some point or other. One classic technique to combat writer's block is to write about the inability to write. It may sound strange but it actually works sometimes.
