Walking, sex, and nipple stimulation.

Walking makes baby put pressure on the cervix and can start dilation and effacement.

Sex--the semen contains prostoglandins which ripen the cervix and start contractions.

Nipple stimulation--20 minutes on, 10 off, for several hours until labor is in a normal pattern. It releases the hormone oxytocin which starts contractions. A breast pump can be very useful for this!

Do NOT use castor oil!! It can cause the baby to have a bowel movement in utero--called meconium--and if asperated can be very dangerous!

Honestly, there is no truly safe way to start a labor that isn't ready to start on it's own.

All the studies that have been done on this show that there is a complex set of signals between the baby and the mother's body that determine when labor begins. Some factors:
-baby is truly full term
-baby is in a position that puts pressure on the cervix
-cervix is "ripe", effaced, and ready to dilate
-mom is calm and not overstressed

The most important thing that you can do to help your sister is help with the last part-help her feel secure, calm, and ready to really have this baby. If she has symptoms of pre-eclampsia, a very helpful thing she can do is increase her daily intake of protein and use salt to taste (if she isn't "addicted" to salty foods, her taste level will tell her exactly how much she needs).

There are herbs that can be used to help make the cervix ready and tone the uterus for the labor, but I would only suggest using those with the advice of a midwife who can actually see her.

Castor oil can get things moving, but most people who have used that have told me they REALLY hated it! I would not try to induce labor this way if she is still preterm.

The best thing to do is to eat a VERY healthy diet, get out there walking and exercising in ways that help her pelvis open and her baby to get into proper position, and relax as much as possible.

Sex can sometimes bring on labor. If she and her husband are still okay with it and it doesn't hurt than it's worth a shot. It worked for me. Walking also helps even if it's just around the house, not only that when she's in labor it will help the contractions come faster and more steadily. Also going driving on a really bumpy road made my contractions come faster.

Listen to your doctor, some babies born early can have big problems. But if your sister feels she must try to start labor. Tell her to try rolling the nipples which can give the uterus a false sense of labor begining and start contractions. It might work. This worked with me on my 3rd child, but she was 2 weeks over due also. She weighed 8lbs, 11oz. Give the pregnancy time, because when the baby is ready to be born labor will begin. With my 2nd child I had gestational diabetis and he was born on time and perfect. He was 8lbs,13 ozs. My 1st was a CSection and was born 4 weeks earliy due to pre-mature labor and he hadn't put on the last month of fat weight and had jaundice. He was 6lbs,13Ozs. My 4th and 5th were both born on time and weighed 9lbs, 9ozs. and 6lbs,11 ozs. I also had 3 misscarriages, so please have her be patient and wait for the special gift she is soon going to have given to her.

I was diagnosed with preeclampsia at 36 weeks and my doctor told me to stay on strict bed rest...the symptoms are a blood pressure higher than 140 over 90..somtimes, but not always, protien in the urine, and severe edema (swelling) in the face, hands, and sometimes..like in my case...the feet and ankles, also, some women experience dizziness and severe headaches and lightheadedness. First and foremost, she needs to get another opinion, mabye she could go to a different ER with a different attending OB, and get thier opinion. Trying to put herself into labor is not safe. They did an emergency C section on me at 37 weeks because of preeclampsia, and my baby was born with respitory distress and with fluid on her lungs. She was in the ICU for a week and was hooked to all kinds of machines.. Its her body and her baby, she should demand that her dr or some other dr at least do the simple checks to tell her yes or no.

There is NO safe way to make herself go into labor. If she had a problem with her doctor the first time she should have looked for another doctor. Also, castor oil DOES NOT get labor moving...all castor oil can do is give you the SHITS. Maybe your sister should try to use a little bit of common sense if she wants to have a healthy baby

Although she may be tempted to have this baby now, the smart thing would be to seek another opinion. She wants to do the safest thing for this baby. I have 3 kids and my kidneys shut down with the first 2, but I still went full term. My uric acid count was very high with my first one. The only thing that helped me was having IV's. I'm not saying at all that her doctor is wrong or right, but it might make her feel better if she was to see another doctor.

Now, I haven't tried this but I have a few friends that have and have been in labor within 24 hours...tell her to take a teaspoon of castor oil...it's not harmful but from what I've heard it works

Lots of walking. My first preganacy, my contractions were 20 minutes apart for about a day and half (!). I was getting really fed up, got on the treadmill in the evening and walked for a long time. My contractions finally became 5 minutes apart after lots of walking.
