In Nintendo Wii Sports (Tennis) how do you hit with side spin?

The AI occasionally does this at the higher levels and I have done it several times by accident. I already know how to lob and hit very fast, but I'd like to be able to consistently put weird spin on the ball.

I do not know how to impart spin - but would like to know how you hit fast or lob consistently.
