The cheapest way is to do it yourself, but honestly, you're better off putting up the money to have an attorney do it for you because there's a lot of legal research involved. If you want to try it yourself, there's a book called "Patent It Yourself," I believe it is published by Nolo Press in San Francisco. But after you read the book you will understand why it's better to hire an attorney. Save the money you'd spend on the book and just put it towards the attorney.

I hold a US Patent, cheapest is not best, depending on your industry, you might want to hire an attorney, they will not leave ANYTHING out, hell they get paid for, plus if there are any challenges, it is their duty to fight it, not yours. I would be more than willing to discuss further

first research your invention odds are its already has one just not in production.and once you apply for one someone might steal your idea. china for one doesn't have to acknowledge your patent.i have invented many things and after going to u of m found out it was already made.then you have to pay for it continually unless someone buys it from you.
