At the county clerk's office, get an AFFADAVIT of INDiGENCY. You'll fill out your income and expenses. It's easy and they don't really check them (in my county). Worked great for me.

Here are a few steps that can lower/eliminate the costs for you.

First, find out if the court has a process for waiving filing fees if you meet certain economic guidelines. Otherwise, at a minimum you will have to pay filing fees.

Second sit down with your spouse and hammer out everything between the two of you. Who will get what, what will happen with the kids, the time line of everything. Resolve as many of the issues as possible on your own.

For any unresolved issues, see if the court offers a free family mediation program you can use.

See if legal aid can refer you to low cost mediation programs.

Once all issues are resolved, have an attorney draft the papers. This will save you money in the future!

If possible in your state, file jointly. Waive all waiting periods. Make it as quick and painless as possible.

The more you fight, the more you want to make a point, the more expensive a divorce gets.

Good luck.

You can go to the library and get examples of the divorce complaint. I would call the clerk's office to find out exactly which form you need. Even if you do it yourself you will still have to pay the filing fee. I would only suggest doing this if it is a simply divorce and both of you have agreed on everything otherwise I would get a lawyer to keep from being screwed.

Don't know where you are obviously. But I know in Texas, there is a book that you can buy or rent at the library, that has all the paperwork you'll need. Has instructions on how to fill them out, and what needs to be done and in what order. However, its going to cost you at least $200. Court costs and fees. Howevr, You will be way better off, saving the money, and getting a lawyer. It isn't cheap but it will be alot better in the long run.

Most things that are free are probably worth what you paid for it.

And if you ask someone who's been divorced why it's so expensive, they'll tell you that it's because it's worth it.

Seriously - separating 2 people who have been married is a complicated matter. I've known people who have done their own, but unless you're a lawyer already, it's probably worth hiring one. Otherwise you'll have endless frustrations, snarls of red tape, delays, and more. And that is just for a simple one.

Divorce costs. But if you do not disagree over anything it will be cheaper. You will probably have to sacrifice some things.
