There is only one way to factorise x^2
x^2 = x*x

How about this:

x^2 = k; ( k is a real number)
x^2-k = 0; has two roots
(x+sqrt(k))(x-sqrt(k))

So
x = sqrt(k) and x = -sqrt(k)
