I recently paid $2.25 for a box of candy with a 3.5 oz of sour patch kids. Do people complain about these types of prices, or are we all conditioned to just take it?

If people stop buying it, they will either lower the prices or stop carrying it.The prices are outrageous.

I worked in the theatre industry for many many years, so let me explain how everything works. Each time a new release comes out, the movie companies take about 80% of the cost of a ticket during the first few weeks the movie is out. The longer the theatre "rents" the movie from company, the less of a cut they take. So basically, the theatre makes no money off the ticket. You have to remember that theatres have to also pay to operate (utilities, salaries, cost of goods, cleaning) so most of what they make goes to operations. The way theatres track their profitability is by tracking a per capita (the amount a person spends on concessions). So actually, the less you buy the less likely prices will go down, since they want to get people to spend at least $3/person if not more. You complain about paying $2.25 for a box of candy at the theatre, but I bet you would pay $6.00 for a hot dog at the ballpark without questioning. It is part of the cost of entertainment.

It's not going to be a popular answer, but it's the way the theater makes money. Plain and simple. Sort of like the cost of hamburger and fries at a nice restaurant, you know you could buy the whole meal for a family of 4 at a grocery store for the price they charge for 1 burger and fries, but you pay the price anyway because that's how the restaurant makes it's money. It's markup.

I actually worked at a movie theater and the owner told me that the movies themselves are very expensive. The films cost like $15-25K or something like that. The ticket prices alone usually do NOT cover the cost of the film. That has to be made up and those "outrageous prices" are their way of doing it.

Yes, it is outrageously priced, and the only thing to do about it is not buy their candy! We always buy our own candy before going to the movies and then sneak it in. Then we never have to pay a cent of their insane candy prices... The only way to get them to lower is to boycott their candy, not buy any, and just bring your own candy and sneak it in. They'll lose money, and might just lower prices. It won't work, of course, because millions of people will still be buying candy, so there's not really anything we can do to lower prices. All I'm going to say is, bring your own candy from home or buy some beforehand, and then sneak it in. You save money that way, and you get a lot more.

You can always email the theatre about your concerns regarding the prices of food there. Follow that up with a letter to the manager, make sure to include your name and address on your letter. In case they want to send you free tickets. And take your own candy in the theatre because your right it is too expensive!

Very good question! No you're not the only one. I am personally a cheap person when it comes to these sorts of things. I think it's really stupid and Movie Theaters augment the price because they know we will end up buying some when we get hungry at the movie theaters. I say we should get to take our own food because they don't allow us to bring items from outside. Whatever, it's stupid!

Yes, it is alot to pay for high fructose corn syrup. Believe it or not, this is the way the theater makes money. Always remember, you don't have to buy it, although I always buy the small hydrogenated oil pop corn anyway. The subliminal messages as you walk in makes it all irresistible.

The doller store sells the exact same candy for only 1.00. There is one in the mall where our movie theater is and I just carry a big purse with three or four boxes of candy in it. Or if you have big pockets you can carry them in there.

Do what everyone else does....load up your purse. I used to work a drug store and right before the movies would start, loads of people would come in and load up on candy.

They are very expensive. I don't know why they are that expensive. Do what I do - I just buy it from store and put it in my pocket and then go to the movies. I don't complain. No need to complain, just get from somewhere else.
