i might even suggest elfen lied, its a more psycological anime about human nature... there are some parts that are quite disturbing and it involves a lot of blood and such... but this would be an 18+ recommendation.

Basilisk is pretty violent with plenty of blood. I think it was about two ninja villages having to kill each other to win. I don't remember very well....
Death Note is pretty good too, but they mostly just die of heart attacks. I still recommend it though, because it's full of awesome!

Hmm Death Note is kinda disturbing... It has a notebook that can kill people and an evil mastermind.. I lurve that show
