every girl is different when she gets her period for the first time...
i had no idea about mine till it happened
my daughter however had stomach/body aches a few days a month for about 3 months before she got hers..
it wasn't cramps just mild leg, back and hip aches
it doesn't hurt getting your period.. just a few mild cramps and mood swings
if you think it is close to time for you to start here are a few tips to help you out
1.) get a small handbag or the smallest zipper top bag you can find (ie makeup bag) to carry around with you to have 'supplies' at hand in case you start and are away from home. not all public restrooms have feminine hygiene product dispensers
in your handbag put 1-2 sanitary napkins, a change of underware, and a sample size container of feminine wash and a one dose sample pack of midol
i did this for my daughter and as luck would have it she started at school ... but she was prepared and didn't have to worry about what to do, what to use or having her clothes messed up
we both still have our small makeup bags with us and always stocked!!
2.) the most important thing to do is relax.... this is a natural part of a woman's life...and a very big mild-stone....
be prepared and all will be just fine
hope this helps you
take care and be safe :)

At first it might be a little uncomforable when you get your period. Cramps may hurt a lot, if you get bad cramps try taking either ibprofen, midol, or pamprin, drink lots of water. When you have your period stay away from caffine. For cramps you can also do light crunches once an hour or so, but only as much as feels comfortable, this will help to loosen the area and lessen the pain a little bit. Remember every girl's/woman's period is different, you might be very irregular at first (even 3 months between periods) but don't worry, things will regulate out after a while, usually. I would suggest using pads and not tampons to start with, as pad's are easier to use. I'd suggest using the Always brand of pads. Change the pad when you need to, for most people it needs to be changed every 2-4 hours, but it all depends on the person. Your period may last anywhere from 1 to 9 days or so. Make sure you mark on a calander when you get your period. Cycles are generally somewhere between 25 and 32 days, but it all depends. On your first day of your period, count it as one, the next day as 2, etc..Until you get to 28 and then mark that day as your "due date", meaning the date around when you should get your period next, but remember everyone is different. If there is a female adult you can trust and feel comfortable talking to, then talk to her about your concerns about getting your period. Girls generally get their period for the first time between the ages of 9 and 16. Once you get your period you'll understand things better and you'll be just fine. Don't worry. They suck big time, yes, but don't worry, everything will be just fine. If you feel you need more information, try running a yahoo search on "periods" or "menstruation" or "menstruation cycle" or something like that.

Nope. I agree with the others. Cramps can be a pain, and I get migraine headaches sometimes. Your back can hurt occasionally, and sometimes my breasts get tender. Other than that, the biggest effect for me is my moods. Just keep an eye on them--they may get a little crazy around your period. Don't freak out--it's a physical thing, and it will pass. If things seem worse than ever...wait a week--that's the rule I live by with my period. I try not to make any major decisions when it's near!

Periods are annoying. Some people have a lot of cramping and feel like they have the flu the first day. Others do not have any cramping. Some blood flows are heavy and some are not. Some last for 7 days and some only last a few days. They have midol for the cramping. They have heavier pads for the heavy bleeding and smaller pads when there is less.

No - it's sure a surprise the first time, and there can be some achy discomfort, but it's no big deal. If you have the presence of mind to think about it now, get the things you will need (like mini pads and maxi pads - i'd go for the adhesive wings to keep em in place). You are not likely to need tampons for the first few times. The first few times might just be spotting, it takes some time for the cycle to really kick in.
Once your cycle kicks in, you could experience cramps, sore breasts, back pain, etc. If you are an OTC kind of person, I suggest Pamprin first, second Midol for that kind of thing. Sit ups will help with cramping - as will lots of water and heat if you are very uncomfortable.
Peace!
PS - I can tell you that PMS causes me little trouble until there is a man in my life, then look out!

No, it doesn't hurt to have a period except that women may sometimes get cramps, but those are relieved by aspirin or medication as such for the most part. Other than that, there's no other pain. And god is it good because if there was pain associated with our period, we would be living in hell one week every month !

Everyone is different, but for me a few days before I start my period my vagina hurts. It's very sensitive, I don't want to be touched, and then my cramps are pretty intense but they are only for 1 day, you sometimes break out ie pimples, my breast are tender.. but as life goes on you get used to it, and know more or less when all this will happen and can somewhat prepare for it. Dr.'s say you should limit the amount of fried, and fatty foods, and amount of caffine you drink about a week before your period. It is supposed to help reduce the cramping.

I'm not going to lie to you here getting your period can be uncomfortable. Sometimes your back can be achy and I have heard of women have cramps in their thighs and there will be times when you just all round don't feel well but then again its only a few days each month for the next forty years or so!

Most women feel cramps right before their period starts and may continue to feel cramping for 2-3 days. This is very variable. Most pain goes away with tylenol/advil
