My Guinea Pig is 7 years old. He eats 2 carrots, a romaine lettuce heart, alfalfa hay, guinea pig food, and a celery stalk everyday. He's very healthy. We give him apple slices about 3 times a week, but make certain not to let him eat the seeds! He may not digest them.

You can bath him once a week if you want, mine seems to like water very much. Johnny Pig likes to cuddle on the couch and watch TV with me while munching on some celery or a carrot. He also giggles, so listen carefully to yours and if I giggle at him he giggles back. It's fun. they have limited mobility becasuse of their funny body types, but cuddling and giggling is a lot of fun!

Food: Guinea pig pellets and timothy hay or alfalfa. Don't use rabbit pellets, they don't have Vitamin C in them since rabbits can make their own and guinea pigs can't. I would recommend timothy hay over alfalfa, I hear it's healthier. Fresh, dark, leafy greens like lettuce are tasty and excellent treats. Carrots are also enjoyable. Avoid gassy foods such as broccoli.

Grooming: Almost none! If your guinea pig is long-haired, then you'll have to brush her everyday though. Short-coated guinea pigs don't need brushing but they'll enjoy it. Bathing is unnecessary and should be avoided unless somehow your guinea pig got really dirty, which usually doesn't happen, trust me.

General care: Once or twice a day, give your guinea pig more food. Throw out the old before doing so. Hay should be available at all times. Observe what your guinea pig does around pellets. Does he ignore the fresh food completely when they're available? Use your judgment on when pellets are around.

Water should be changed every day. It's best to freshen out the cage by removing soiled bedding once a day, and a full clean out once a week. Use a mixture of half water and half vinegar to clean out the plastic bottom. Rinse well.

Remember that guinea pigs are social creatures and need excessive, two hours out of their cage is best. Watch your guinea pig when she's out, making sure she stays away from electrical wires. Talk to your guinea pig and pet her a lot, she'll enjoy that.

Good luck with your new friend.

(By the way, why's your guinea pig so young? Guinea pigs are supposed to be separated from their mothers at two months of age.)

f you bring home a guinea pig for a pet, make sure that his cage is set in a place away from drafts and extreme temperatures. Also, the floor of his cage should be smooth and covered with some sort of safe and comfortable bedding, such as wood shavings and Timothy hay. Additionally, be sure to place cardboard tubes or empty coffee cans inside the cage, because guinea pigs love to run and play hide and seek.

Guinea pigs need plenty of Vitamin C, which is found in guinea pig pellets (guinea pig food commonly found in pet stores). Be careful, though! When shopping for your new pet's food, make sure you don't buy rabbit pellets. Although they look similar to guinea pig pellets, don't accidentally buy those instead because they don't contain the necessary Vitamin C!

For a little variety, your pet guinea pig will enjoy a small amount of fresh fruit, vegetables, or grass hay. But, be sure to remove any leftover fresh food before it spoils. Also, put your guinea pig's water in an upside down bottle with a drinking tube, and always keep the water fresh and the bottle and tube clean.
Guinea pigs groom themselves carefully, but you should still brush them on a regular basis to help keep their coats sleek and clean. Interestingly, not only will your new pet's hair keep growing throughout his lifetime, but his teeth will continue to grow, too! Make sure you give your guinea pig a block of wood to chew on, so that his teeth don't get too long. Of course, make sure that the wood is not painted or treated with pesticides, so that you don't harm your new friend.
Finally, remember that guinea pigs love company, so make sure that you're a constant friend to your pet.

You can feed guinea pigs veg, fruits or pellets from the stores
You can wash a guinea pig any time
You can just take the guinea pig out and pet it or buy it something from the pet store and see if it likes it.

For the first few days, let him hide in his pen to recover from the shock of moving somewhere new.

Handle him often, so he gets used to you. At first he'll be really nervous, but he'll soon be happy to lie in your arms and be stroked.

Don't worry if he panics and runs away when you try to pick him up, it's a natural reaction. Pick him up around his belly, keeping his back legs supported. Make sure he doesn't jump out of your hands, he could injure himself. GPs are always a little spazzy, especially about being picked up.

Unless he REALLY stinks, don't wash him, he'll be quite happy to groom himself.

Guinea pigs need vitamin c every day, or they can get scurvy (Seriously, Arrrr, Jim lad and all that) - Broccoli is good, it's got a lot in it, and they go crazy for it. Carrots are a favourite too. Make sure he has plenty of hay to munch on, it helps his teeth and digestion. Timothy Hay is best. NEVER FEED HIM LETTUCE - IT'S TOXIC TO GUINEA PIGS. Some dry food mix is a good think for them - mine like the stuff with dried fruit bits in it.

He'll eat his droppings. This is normal, he needs to do this to properly digest his food and get the nutrients out of it.

He'll want fresh water in a drip-feed bottle, but don't worry if he hardly seems to touch it - he'll get a lot of fluid from fresh veg.

Make sure he has somewhere to hide and feel comfortable (even if it's just an upside-down shoebox with a side ripped off).

Don't put anything in his pen unless you're happy with him chewing the bejesus out of it. He needs to do this to keed his teeth ground down.

Bits of cardboard tubes about 4" across (like carpets come rolled on) make great hidey holes and tunnels.

Make sure you give him plenty of attention, so he doesn't get lonely. Consider another guinea pig to give him company, though boys can sometimes fight.

Find a good vet who understands guinea pigs well, just in case.

Check your libaray or bookstore for books on how to care for him.

Fruit everyday is splended! It will keep him nice and heathly, its also a yummy treat!

Uhhh I think a no on the washing. I think Guinea pigs like sand baths, not water. Not completly sure.

Yeah you can play with him be sure not to squeeze his cute little face!!!
