I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid ES. The air bag light on the dash has been on for several years. A while back, I had asked the dealer to look at it and they said the spring had to be replaced ($250!!). I never got around to doing anything about it. Question is, can I buy one online and safely install it? Is this likely to remedy the warning light problem?

I should add that I plan to sell the car, not keep it. Looking for an inexpensive way to remove one of the two things wrong with the car. Thanks.

The 'spring' you are referring to is the 'clock spring'. This conducts power from the steering column to airbag. The several other posts that say "stay away' are correct. Air Bag systems are very complex and require special expertise to repair. The posters that say to disconnect battery and go for it are very naive. They don't know steering column complexity or issues associated with air bags. It is unlikely that one will blow up in your face, but without 100% proper repair, they may not actuate properly either. Leave this one to the experts. Marc

Don't risk it... for $250!?! You could be seriously injured or killed doing any work on the airbag yourself, not to mention if it doesn't work when you need it. That is one piece of equipment you want to know is in perfect working order.

Airbags last like 10 years! That is like 7 cents a day! A good investment!

You better let a certified dealer install it. If you start messeing with it, it could go off and injure you.
