Its the nickel in the earrings. You can coat the earrings with nail polish and use a plastic holder to keep the holder from bothering your ear. The other thing to do and it would be the best.
Thank him, tell him you love them but you need hypoallergenic earrings. Then you and he can go back to the store and exchange these for ones that do not bother your ears.
Likely you have the same difficulty with watches and other jewelery. He might as well know as there are a large assortment of new jewlery lines that take care of the allergies because so many people have them.
I think he will understand especially if you tell him how happy you are he thought of such a touching and thoughtful gift. I don't think he will be offended.
Tell him you love his taste and hope to always get such gifts from him but that in order to do so, he needs to understand how to buy and work around your allergies. My husband (before we were married) had to do the same thing. I am grateful I told him or I might still have sore, swollen and leaky ears.
Good luck!

I would say that if you are allergic to them there is nothing you can do. I am allergic to costume jewlery. Things like the earrings you buy from the little stores in the malls break me out like crazy. No, it does not make him a bad boyfriend for not knowing (like the doink above me said) and it doesn't make you a bad girlfriend for not being able to wear them.
Just make sure you are honest with him. Don't wear them if you break out because if you keep wearing them your ears could scar like mine did. Tell him you love them but you are allergic to them. There is no way he could be mad about something like that. Sorry I don't know of some special treatment that makes you not allergic to them.

Don't do anything to hurt him. Do the clear nail polish trick that that girl said...cuz he might think you don't like him. He's only human, humans make mistakes. He probably felt happy when he saw them for you. I just wouldn't have the heart to tell him I'm allergic but try using tricks people mentioned. And don't always wear them cuz then he'll know you don't like them. And wear them somewear where he is not but you might "bump" into him and he'll notice you wearing them when hes not around. Good luck.

Tell him that you are allergic to them. You both could go back to the store where he purchased them and maybe get a similar pair that you aren't allergic too.

well i'm allergic to some earings too, so what i do is put some nail polish around the part that's going to touch my skin. i prefer invisible nail polish, i dont know how you call it. but that works really good.

Maybe he can take them back and get you a pair your not allergic to. You're probably allergic to the medal. Maybe he can take them back and get you a different pair. I wouldn't break up with your boyfriend over a pair of earrings.
