An Ethernet card is a card that is placed inside the PC or laptop that will allow the computer to the network (or Internet). The newer ones are usually plug and play. Yes, they are used to connect to the Internet in college as well as home, work, or anywhere else you can connect to the Internet/network. The Ethernet card is also called NIC which stands for (Network Interface Card)
Hope this helps

Its a network card...simliar to the one that you use for your phone that hooks up to the wall plug...except its a little more wide...and it connects to high speed connections such as DSL, CABLE, T1...there are quite few cards usually you have a 10/100 mbps card which is used to dsl, cable, or t1...the card with 10, 100 or 1000 mbps cards are used for the fastest connections avaible on this very globe there t2, t3 connections bu tim not sure if there is a t4..there very fast like 10x faster than cable...There used to connect you to the internet which you should of figured out in those words...and ofcourse there used at colleges even if you connecting wirelessly they have to be hooked up to a wireless router...so either way for a high speed internet you need a ethernet card...there even used at business, your house [if you have high speed connection(wireless connection, dsl, cable etc.) and many other places]

Eithernet cards are the network cards in computers that allow them to connect to networks. These are used in 99% of all computers, and the hole looks like a phone line would fit in it, but there are actually 6 wires instead of 4 in them. The cable that connects into them is called ethernet, of course, and looks a little thicker than phone cable (and is also typically completely rounded).
Nowadays, nearly all network communications use ethernet that are 'wired'. Other wired connections include usb, firewire, fiber, and utp, but you will hardly ever see them on personal computers. The other most common network solution (and one that is used very commonly on college campuses now) is wireless. This is called Wifi, or 802.3. Check with your college campus director to see if they use wireless or eithernet on their campuses/dorms/etc.
Good luck,
Mikel
