As usual, the ignorant, ill-informed people are giving out un-true answers here, just to get there 2 points.

Zone- Alarm is a firewall NOT an A-S
Avast is a antivirus NOT an A-S
Norton is NEITHER free or an A-S
Panda is an antivirus NOT an A-S

Keep your Adaware and Spybot but pick and choose at least 1 anti-spyware from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Ewido:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

A-Squared:

And as a final caution:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

You are wise to be sticking with the free A-S apps. Most are excellent and it is hard to swindle someone with a free product!

The best antispyware is a user who doesn't contract the problem in the first place. Since that has become nearly impossible (thank you myspace) I recommend starting at the route of the problem.

Internet Explorer and Java, these are two applications that are notorious for allowing anything and everything to infect your computer. Both have uses and shouldn't be removed entirely but you can go days without ever needing to fire one up for browsing on the web. Let's start by downloading an alternative to Internet Explorer, its a little something called Firefox and its free from http://www.mozilla.com

To disable Java inside of Firefox you go to Tools >> Options >> Content and uncheck the box next to "Enable Java".

As for removing spyware, I have heard good things lately about Super Anti-Spyware. Nothing will remove everything but the developers of this software have done an excellent job in a short period of time.

Another excellent program to install alongside that is the Microsoft Windows Defender software. This freeware is just what the doctor ordered for removing spyware from within the network stack of Windows XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

If you start with these different applications at a clean install of Windows XP you will have a noticeable longer run without any problems. Of course should you decide you cannot stand these problems any longer you can always give Linux or Mac a go and see where you end up.

Ok heres the thing with spyware, trojens and adware(let call them junk for the rest of this dialog) there is no one program developer that can take care of them all free or not. I know there are tons of programs that say they do, but its not true. It takes alot more work to find, classify, and remove this junk than it does to create them; and there are more people making them than working to get rid of them. Does that mean that there is nothing we can do? No, a good defense is a good offense in this situation. First you need a firewall. A firewall is like the front door to your house, you let in and out what you want but not what you don't. So when junk comes a knockin you can close the door and keep it out. Now there is some clever junk that still gets in, thats where anti junk programs come in. Like i said before there in no ONE program developer that can get rid of them all. So you should use at least two. But doesn't that get expensive you say? No, lucky for you and all the other tight wads out there some of the best programs are free, yes free, as in no yearly fees, one time fees, ect... I know this because i've tried alot of them myself free and not free; and the best were free.(in my experience)You should also invest in some virus protection, i can only recommend Norton Internet Security.(It has both firewall and anti virus but is not free) Well thats it, just remember to keep them updated. Oh yeah below are the links to some free programs(and descriptions of). Download, install, update and run them all and you will be junk free.
Ad -Aware= http://www.download.com/ad-aware-se-pers...
spybot= http://www.download.com/spybot-search-de...
zonealarm= http://www.download.com/zonealarm/3000-1...
Ccleaner= http://www.download.com/ccleaner/3000-21...

p.s. these are all free and don't take up allot of processing power unless your using them.

P.S.S. Ccleaner also has a registry cleaner that can fix alot of damage junk could have caused.

while not actually an anti-spyware program that will locate already installed spyware, i highly recommend McAfee SiteAdvisor. This simple program runs in your browser while surfing the web and protects you from spyware, adware, spam, phishing and identify theft. It's completely free and all of the site's I've visted have been tested by the software, very few have not been. And if you do happen to find a site that hasn't been tested, you can add feedback about the site is regards to phishing, spyware, ect.

You can download free trials of Norton Antivirus/Netware at their home page. Symantec has one, too, as does McAfee, I think. Use your search engine to look around for "spyware free free trial shareware" and other keywords. You know how its' done. CNET.com might help you find a good, current one. Most have an auto-update feature. Ad Aware is pretty popular, though. There are lots of options for you.

Honestly, at the rate the Phreaks are cooking these programs, the best one is to unhook your modem. Seriously, Good luck. I hope I helped.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

Windows Defender.

www.microsoft.com

search: Windows Defender. I'd wait until January, as it is still in beta as of Dec. 31st. If you have spyware on your system, the only way you're truly get rid of it is to reinstall XP.
