Gothic architecture I think originated from France and the Baltic countries so I am assuming the dress also originated there too. Granted, traditional goth is a composite these days but the basic style does appear to have leanings toward middle and dark age style - the corset tends to be popular and there are lot of Celtic/druidic style clothes also included in goth apparel.

gothic is a style of architecture in churches. the word gothic as in black clothes and no friends came from the people copying it.
