Can't say I've ever seen a bank that even checked credit for a checking account. Normally all you need is a picture ID and about a hundred dollar bill.

You're in luck! There's a new program called "Get Checking". After you complete a short class, you'll receive a certificate that you can take to a participating financial institution (I personally prefer a Credit Union over a bank since banks are purely for profit organizations and Credit Unions are not for profit organizations!) and you can open a checking account.
To find out more about this program go to www.getchecking.org.
Good luck!

Do you have bad credit or bad BANK debt that is unpaid and being reported to check x and/or debt/bad check collectors?
if it is the former, read above anwsers.
if it is the latter, assuming that you 'need' a checking account and you can't get one because the banks shows you as a bad debtor or bank accounts via check x system, you'll need proof that your previous bad bank debt is paid in full. here is what you do...
1. DO NOT get pay day loans from checking cashing stores to pay other bills. they are like loan sharks. they attack with high pay back interest. this sounds crazy, but it is better to NOT pay a bill than to create a bill you cannot afford to pay a bill.
2. now, get a prepaid visa where you can make direct deposits onto. i used rush card (i think they also have cards available in baby phat lol). it was great. nope... no checks. it COST to use it... but you can use it "like" a checking account.
watch your spending: circa 2004, you are charged $1 for each purchase and atm transaction - HOWEVER - its okay. you can afford it. the money comes directly out of your accout and you never have 'over draft fees'. you can also do probably 99% of your bill pay with a visa logoed atm/debit card.
3. NEXT... accumulate your money on this account... and pay off IN FULL your bad bank debt directly with check x or creditor. most of these places won't take visa... they want a cashier check or money order. and a personal check won't do, which you don't have. THAT IS OKAY...
withdraw the money and go purchase a fifty cent or $1 money order from your grocery store or check cashing store (this is the only time you are allowed to give the check cashing store money). if it is a cashier check they want, go to a bank and purchase a cashier check. if you're not a member of the bank, the fees are usually higher, so check around for rates.
4. pay off all your bad bank debts.
5. keep copies of your reciepts and acct numbers from each place and take these into the bank of your choice as proof that the debts are paid. they will verify funds are paid or take copy of the receipts as proof.
watch the banker smile as he/she says 'how much do you want to start your account with?'... you smile and say "xyz" and VOILA!
you have manage to do three things:
1. not accumulate debt
2. pay off debts
3. open a brand spanking new account
further advice:
if you KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are a bad check writer (i am) - don't order checks. just don't do it... pay everything with your visa atm card and never worry about bounced checks again.
BUT KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SPENDING... banks have higher limits at which they will reject your card if you are over the limit. you can be trollying along all day racking up $500 in over limit charges and not even know it - and they don't mind because they are going to charge you with the overdraft fees. And some banks, will charge you a fee compounded daily for each day you are over your limit!
So watch your spending.
Suze Orman gave advice once: you should know exactly how much money you have in the bank every single day.
And it works! I do this by reviewing my account online daily; once in the evening to see impending charges and once morning to see what has cleared from the night before.
Good luck!

If you walk up with an assload of cash, they will open a checking account for you. Banks never turn down money.
BTW, you may want to check out a credit union, instead of a bank. They would be more likely to consider all of your history than just checking a credit report.

Bad credit doesn't have anything to do with a checking account. You just need some money to put in the account. You can get a debit card to draw on it. What you won't get is a credit card.

You don't need good credit for a checking account, only cold, hard cash. Try a credit union if the standard banks in your area are giving you a hard time. They will open one for you.

It is irrevelant whether or not you have bad credit-unless you been writing bad checks. If not, put some money in a savings account at the bank you wish to open your checking account at.

Look for banks called "Second Chance Banking". We have them in the Kansas City area. One example is Bank Midwest. It is where I had to get a checking account. Good luck.
