It depends on the computers on your network. First, add a few anti-adware and anti-spyware programs. Then, the practical answer is good products that meet your needs that do not interfere with each other.

For example, a three computer home network for two adults and two kids, you could use the Norton Internet Security 2003 software suite (firewall, anti-virus, privacy and content filters...), PestPatrol, BOClean, IEClean, RoboForm, SpyBot Search & Destroy, Linksys Firewall Router (hardware), and the SortOnce online email service with anti-virus and spam filters. You would set up Windows and Norton for automatic updates.

PestPatrol, BOClean and SpyBot have manual but easy one click updates. With DSL or cable modem service, all of these updates are fast. Layers of defense are the best approach, so you should have two firewalls (software and hardware), two anti-virus (online and software), and three programs to fight Trojans, worms, spyware and other pests (PestPatrol, BOClean and SpyBot).

IEClean makes it easy to remove browser related files. RoboForm protects and keeps track of your passwords and personal information. What about interference? Using two software firewalls is not a good idea. That is why you should use a hardware and software combination. For anti-virus, using an online email service with back up by anti-virus software on your computer is the best combination. Watch out for the overlap of scanning by PestPatrol MemCheck, Norton Anti-Virus, and BOClean.

Any problems can usually be resolved by turning off MemCheck. Note: This is only one example. There are lots of other combinations that may better meet your specific needs. (copied from http://security.ngoinabox.org/Documentation/Misc/www.firewallguide.com/faq.htm)

Your current setup is not bad, but it is not the best, either. It ranks somewhere in the middle.

ZoneAlarm Pro has an excellent firewall, as well as antivirus and antispyware utilities. ZoneAlarm also has a very user-friendly interface, allows you to easily view and change any program's Internet connection abilities, and has support for many network connections and port settings. You can download and try it out free for 15 days, after which it gives you the option of either purchasing it or converting to the free, basic, firewall-only program.

You can download it here: http://tinyurl.com/zko8w

Otherwise, I suggest using AVG's antivirus/firewall combo. It can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/yjrc4y

AVG also has a free, basic version, but rather than its basic version consisting of only a firewall, it has only virus protection. That makes is work very well with free ZoneAlarm, as you then get everything but antispyware. If you want to get the job done for as little as possible (free), download both the free versions of ZoneAlarm and AVG.

I love this pair and even better they are free.

I like AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)

And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:

Last month I had over 230 virus & possibly a trojan horse. My internet provider sent an email and notified me of the problem -- that it was badly infected and bouncing stuff off their firewall.

Naturally I was alarmed. So I immediately bought the Spyware Doctor package at the store, installed it and cleaned it up. I try to scan it daily. No problems since then.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:
