I meant if like you passed to someone and he dribbled a while before scoring does it count?

Or if you passed to another guy right under the basket and theres another guy trying to block him although he scores does it count?

Generally there should be a rule and i want to hear it...

On the spot, with scorer's, an assist is a judgement call. I'm trying to remember the exact wording of the rule but it goes something like: "An assist is play where the assistor finds a player in a positional advantage, or his/her assist lead to the player getting a positional advantage, that lead to scoring a field goal.

So as you can see, some decision has to be made by the scorer's table on whether these conditions were satisfied. Hope that helped.

usually when the player dribbles for a while, it doesn't count, unless it's like an open court fast break pass.

But if you don't dribble, it does count.
So it's basically a pass that leads to a field goal.
Sometimes I think the assist rule is unfair, if the guy gets fouled and make the free throws, and the guy that passes him the ball won't get credited for it.
Or if it's just a regular pass, and the guy make an amazing tough shot the passer does gets credited for it.
