I think you have the wrong guy. Kit Carson died, apparently peacefully in Colorado. I took the liberty of getting information on Bill Hickok. The following is a cut and paste from a web site biography of the man we know as Wild Bill:
On 2nd August, 1876, Wild Bill Hickok was playing cards in Deadwood. Jack McCall, seeking revenge for the death of his brother, shot Hickok in the back of the head. At the time of his death, Hickok was holding a pair of black aces and a pair of eights, and this became known as "A Dead Man's Hand".
I am an avid student of the old west and while I can't remember where I got the information, I'm certain I read that the kicker (5th card) was a Queen, and if memory serves, of Hearts.

Kit Carson's death ... In the summer of 1866, he moved to Colorado to expand his ranching business and took command of Fort Garland. Ill health forced him to resign the following year, and in 1868 the family moved to Boggsville, near present-day La Junta, Colorado. He died in nearby Fort Lyons on May 23, 1868. The following year, his remains were moved to a small cemetery near his old home in Taos, New Mexico.
Dead Man's Hand belonged to another gunfighter: Wild Bill Hickok and it was 2 Aces over 2 eights ...
