Space is not an issue. I'm hoping for one with the greatest variety of trains, cars, and accesories. And can tracks and trains(motors) from different manufactures be used together?

Your best bet is HO gauge, 1/87 scale, for model railroading. It has the most variety, choices, and is just the right size. N is also good, but has somewhat less variety and is considerably smaller, hence less detail.

Track is compatible as long as its the same code. eg. 83 with other code 83 or 100 with other code 100.. Locomotives can be easily compatible if you use DCC...on DC some may run the same speed, and some may not.

I'd stay away from Lionel if you want to pursue the modeling aspect of the hobby.

With no space issues, H-O gauge would probably be the best. But my friends tell me that N gauge is far better. And yess, you can mix and match. But you will want to stick to the hobby shop versions rather than toy versions.

Wikipedia suggests that O gauge is the most popular, but I don't see a lot of them anymore, except for little kids. "The modern standards for toy trains also include S gauge, HO scale, N scale, and Z scale, in descending order of size. HO and N scale are the most popular model railway standards of today; inexpensive sets sold in toy stores and catalogs are less realistic than those sold to hobbyists. O gauge arguably remains the most popular toy train standard. Another size that is attracting interest among hobbyists is building and operating trains from LEGO, or L gauge, which is roughly 1/38 scale."

The easiest to get items to a certain gauge would be the HO scale. Once you have decided this is what you want to do,you should change over to the "Real Gauge" of train collectors...the scale of the Lionel Trains! Do a web search for train collectors clubs They are always looking for people to perpetuate this hobby.

If space is no issue Lionel O gage trains would be the best, they let you choose from a variety of companies that are operating in the US, and Canada. For a variety of trains, cars, and sets.

A variety railroad format could consistently contain mountains & the north west area of the U. S. has the numerous suited. So i might advise the N W area of the U. S. for many distinctive terrain.

HO, although that's really a scale, not a gauge.
