G'day,
I have been living in Point Cook for the last 4 years and enjoys it very much. It's only abt 20min drive west of city, it is affordable (as a young family) and quite close to the beach.
I am also attaching a link from The Age newspaper abt the crime rate in Melbourne, as well as some info abt some residential estates in the west.
Good luck.

Hey, Brian. That all depends on what you do and what you like. If you're a beach-type person, then anywhere on the Bay is cool, from Port Melbourne to Edithvale. If you're a shopper, then South Yarra is fabbo as is Chadstone and the surrounding suburbs. If you're a cafe latte type, then Carlton is cool. These are all (with the exeption of Edithvale) inner-city suburbs. Melbourne isn't a huge place and you can see cows and rolling hills within about 50 minutes of the city, so, regardless of what you are in our lovely city for (work/play/study etc), nowhere is very far from anywhere and most places are on the train lines. If you're new and young or someone who works a lot or parties a lot, inner-city is the way to go. Personally, I need a backyard and grass and love the suburbs, but even still, Melbourne city is only 20 minutes away.

I agree with the other responses- take advantage of Port Phillip Bay. It is beautiful, but of course it depends on your budget. I haven't lived there for about 7 years, but back then you could get a place by the beach in the Mordialloc to Edithvale area for a reasonable price (to rent at least!). Most places closer to the city like Port Melbourne tend to be a lot more expensive, but can provide savings on transport costs.
Enjoy your new location wherever you end up!!!
