There are a few things you need to do first - you need to find out if you have any memory slots free. The memory on a pc is reffered to as 'banks'. Most mobos (motherboards) come with anything from 2 two banks and higher (servers for example can have 8 banks or more). memory has progressed over the years so as long as your pc isnt that old it should either be running SD RAM memory or DDR memory (or of course RAMBUS RIMM memmory). So if you have a free slot you can either get a stick(s) of memory to fill all the banks or you may have to buy larger size memory and get rid of the ones you have on the mobo.
If you have a branded pc it may be easier for you to get more memory - just go back to the shop and ask them what memory that model takes, or if you have the book that came with the motherboard (you dont always get this if you buy a prebuilt system) it should describe the type of memory and what configuration the mobo will support.
If you know what the name of the mobo and model (it will flash up as you boot the pc on, but unless you know what your looking for it may be difficult to figure out, as the graphics card will also show up as will other details), you can use http://www.crucial.com/ to tell you what memory your mobo will support. You can then use this info to buy from anywhere you want. If you are still stuggling geeting your mobo details, try this: from the start bar, click start, run and then type 'winmsd' without the quotes and click on ok. If you look at the System Model values this should list your mobo. Alternatively if you have access to software like Sisoft Sandra Pro this will give you complete details of your whole system, including the type of memory you are already using, and if you have any free memory slots)
I buy by memory via mail order it is much cheaper that way - I use http://scan.co.uk but there are a lot of good ones out there. If you are lucky enough to have a local pc shop/store near you, take just the base (dont need anything else) with you and they should be able to tell what you need. Dont go buying memory if you dont know if your mobo will run on it or it could be an expensive exercise!
Hope this helps, happy new year!!

You can purchase memory sticks to either replace those you have or to add another if you have empty slots. Just be sure to check the type as there are a number of different ones. If you don't know where they are a computer repair store can help you out.

Get more memory mean upgrade your RAM chip. You better get your computer dealer to do it for you cuz it's a hardware job. If you are using P4, think 1GB of RAM should be enough for most game.
