Do you know how many artist have had drug and alcohol addiction??? and they overcame it, it doesn't mean they were not talented, look at ray charles, johnny cash, miles davis...All had drug addiction, but some of the greatest entertainer of our times...james brown was one of the great ones, yes he has made mistake, but who hasn't? are you perfect? you've made mistakes, im sure if you died, you would want people to pay tribute to you and remember your triumphs.

Dagconst ... I hear where you're "coming from," as they say, but don't dismiss his wide-spread, long-term popularity.

James Brown's popularity wasn't limited to just certain American ethnic groups. Furthermore, he has a fan base abroad, as well.

Some of, perhaps ALL, the things you harshly accuse him of doing may be accurate. I'm no historian and I'm not his biographer, either. But if/when James Brown had done wrong, he took his lumps and went on with things. I don't think that will much improve your impression of him, but look at how the new generation of entertainers behaves. Many of those who get into trouble seem to have an excuse for everything. To make matters worse, many people who are overly liberal in their thinking seem to celebrate, idolize, and defend behavior that most level-headed people would describe as despicable. This is what American society has come to in recent decades.

Yes, James Brown was "on the fringe," sometimes. But there was much more good than bad. Furthermore, I understand he was a bit of a philanthropist, too. We can always benefit from more generous-minded philanthropists.

I hope this answers your question.

Because to some people, he was a national hero. He wasn't mine, but he was to others.

I also agree to what you are saying about him, but I also remember something else...one of his wifes died (not because of him)...I forget the cause, but it was serious enough for him to threaten to sue...he was crushed...

Whatever you and I think about him, he was still a human being, and there are those who are going to mourn. Personally, I was stunned and slightly saddened by his death.
