Where do you audition to be in a show?

You wait for a casting call.
Usually a theatre will put in the paper, or put out flyers, that it's having auditions for a certain play.

You can always call up a theatre to get more information on when they may do this.

Get some publicity shots (photos that show different poses and charateristics) for an agent. They will inform you when casting agencies are auditioning for movies, shows or even commercials. The more you get in, the more you will get called back

For Theatre and stage shows, ask around for different theatre companies that put on plays (find out some phone numbers from local theatres) and they can tell you what their upcoming plays / shows will be.
If you are too late for a production they are doing now, offer to help backstage with make-up or something to know the right people.

Your best shot is to find an agent. Go to open calls for agencies and if they take you, they'll give you the connections you need to audition for a real show for real money.

It's competitive, but going to normal open calls without an agent is probably 1000X more competitive.
