for one thing: it's the experience...
the chemistry is another thing
and the best thing is that they evolved through the years...
they adapt to the changing world of music and of the listeners without sacrificing their integrity...

They're amazing rip-offs, that's about it. Need proof? Listen to their 2005 song "Vertigo," then listen to Sonic Youth's 1990 song "Dirty Boots." It's practically the same tune! Check it out for yourself at the link below. U2 is, without a doubt, one of the most overrated bands in the history of rock. I love what Henry Rollins said about them in a recent Crazewire interview:
Q: Who do you have a problem with?
A: U2, in particular, bug me because it's like such a bad rhythm section. They're kind of a one-trick band that's propped up by really good production. I do applaud Bono's humanitarian efforts; getting third-world debt acknowledged, trying to help AIDS in Africa and lending awareness to that. I think that's great and I'm sure he contributes a lot of his own money to that. That stuff is also great because it keeps him out of the studio, so there's no downside to this.

in many interviews, they have said that their friendship comes first. if it ever came to a point where they would have to choose their friendship or U2, U2 would go. they remain fiercely loyal to eachother after all that has happened, and this intensely strong bond that connects them is becusae they all share a deep and sincere desire to change the world with their music. although it's not the most technically skilled or advance music ever, they have that awesome chemistry when it's just four guys playing music in a room, and that's what keeps them going. The sum is greater than its parts. Playing alone, it might not be anything special, but with all four, it's something very moving. Their songs are timeless and never really go out of "style". all four members also keep up with the current music scene, and their sound is ever changing because they want to reinvent themselves and stride to be better instead of just making hte same type of music all the time. U2 came out in the early 80s, but if you listen to those tracks, they are not indicative of 80s song stereotypes with all those synthesizers and stuff. You still hear those songs from joshua tree, "pride", "i will follow" and "new year's day" on hit radio stations today. With Achtung Baby, they reinvented themselves from their "joshua tree" sound, while still being able to sound signaturely U2. Pop was also another experimental adventure, and with the millenium also came a new style. being able to keep up with the music scene and gain new fans every year is something incredible. U2 has never had a lineup change like most of the other rock bands around at their time (rolling stones, etc), and they were on the verge of breaking up right before making achtung baby, but they figured out all their problems, wrote "one", and made one of their most important and beloved albums ever. they have that "it" factor and it's indescribabe =)

hm, i think it's because they ha(d)ve such great lyrics, that spoke for/to many people...they're not great because of Bono, i think. my guess is that Bono is great because he learned how to use well the power given to him as U2 grew up as such an important band :)

Beautiful songs that have something spiritual about them. Achtung Baby is awesome and the stats are that 1 in 3 people in this country owns a copy of that album!

I think it's because they have Bono. He's supposed to be something great. I don't get it, but he's just great.
