It's called a mint mark and reveals in which city the coin was minted. P ) - Philadelphia
( D ) - Denver

The coin you are referring too was struck at the Denver mint, thus the D. The D for Denver has been used since 1906. It is however not the first time a D was used as a mint mark in the U.S.,gold coins minted from 1838-1861 at the Dahlonega, Georgia mint used the letter D first. In the U.S. proper the following mint marks were used D twice, CC- Carson City,O- New Orleans,P or no mint mark Philadelphia, S-San Francisco, and W for West Point. May I also throw in M for the Manila mint in the Philippines, when the Islands were under U.S. sovereignty 1903-1935 and as a Commonwealth 1936-1945. Now you have had a mint history lesson and it was free.

Years ago they also minted coins in, New Orleans, which was an O, mint mark, and also Carson City, which was a C, mint mark, these mints have closed and most coins are minted in Denver, or carry the D, mint mark, Even the coins without a mark are mostly minted in Denver. San Fransisco, is mostly used for mint sets that you can purchase. As a set of coins

That means that your penny was minted in Denver. The link below to the U.S. Mint has a picture of a penny with a D mark.

The D indicates that it was made at the Denver mint.

The other operating mints are in Philadelphia, and San Francisco
