When I was a kid, it seems like I was always chosen to serve the team penalty and I thought it wa because the coach didnt like me... or that I sucked. :)
Does anyone know why or how a (professional) coach selects this person to serve the penalty?
Thanks in advance!

In the NHL they have to send someone who was on the ice at the time of the infraction. Usually the coach will choose a forward simply because they are more interchangible and they dont want to go down a defenseman if at all possible. They will make sure not to send a penalty killing forward to the sin bin so usually it will be an even strength player than doesnt see much time on the PK or PP. It depends on the coach but often they choose someone who is among their quickest skaters so they can get back into a play faster (provided he isnt one of the better penalty killers). Others have different ideas on what works but the majority tend to stick to the fastest forward that doesnt kill penalties.

I play junior and and have played pretty competitive hockey all my life and it seems that all the way through the coaches put whoever is the worst (sorry man) or whoever they dont need for the PK in the box. For example we have a kid on my team who plays maybe 7 shifts a game but he serves every penalty that we need him to.

if you get a penalty for to many men on the ice, most likely the coach will send one of his forwards cause they usually dress 6 defence man. so if your not good on the penalty kill and you where on the ice as the penalty was called then yes the coach will send you to the box. the coach has to send someone that was on the ice as the penalty was called, can't pick someone from the bench.

some of my coaches used to put the most skilled player that wasnt involved in the kill in the box this way if your team has posession when the penalty is up you have a skilled player out for a chance at an odd man rush

Who he'd like on the ice after the penalty is over is a big consideration. Speed is important.

it somewhat is as much as the coach, oftentimes it somewhat is the least effective of the gamers on the ice on the time of the infraction. In beer league you desire that the worst participant on the ice (on your team of course) volunteers themselves yet on occasion you gotta bribe them ..
