I can get xp home or xp media for the same price. This laptop will be for a college student. Primary use is word and internet. Which would you choose and why. I am not going to pay to upgrade to xp pro so that is not an option.
Thanks

I have hear that many times that vista is coming out. Won't that make laptops more expensive? I just need something basic.

if you can get xp media for the same price then get it. it contains some multimedia functions what xp home doesn't have. if these functions are used or not doesn't matter but in case they are needed you will have them.
concerning windows vista you're right. it will make a laptop more expensive because it needs more ram (supposedly 1GB). but it's no necessity to have windows vista, especially not when first released, because it will presumably have a bunch of bugs.

If you are purchasing the laptop in the near future, it won't matter which one you get. Make sure that you get a free or inexpensive upgrade to Windows Vista.
Then in May or June after Vista is well established, backup all the data on the laptop and reformat it to Windows Vista.
Beside that factor, xp home and media center won't matter. Your functionality will be the same for the most part, although I do like home better...

XP media is basicly xp that is made for entertainment. listen to music watch videos all at the push of a button. It runs like normal XP untill then but once its pushed you'll get a multimedia experience like no other. But you may want to wait till after Jan 30 so you can get a computer with Vista(Microsofts new os). It has great graphics and media center(home premium and ultimate editions). Great computing power for the same price.

I have xp media center and I like it. Never had xp home so I can't really compare between the two. Good luck in choosing one.

you might as well go with media center since it includes all of the features of xp home but also includes the media center add-on
