I think Chris learns that essentially, in our world, the pursuit of "happiness" is the pursuit of "money". Not necessarily to become rich, but enough to allow you to meet your basic human needs like, shelter, food, and a sense of worthiness.

And it's one hell of a pursuit when you start from the bottom of the economic ladder.
