This is a heck of a thing. There are so many best/worst lists that exist, and so many differing opinions. If you're looking for a strict film-making perspective, there are tons of options. If you really look at it, the American Film Institute list is pretty impressive, although they don't always give contemporary films their due.

I do agree though. The best movie of all time is Citizen Kane. No movie was so subversive, so well written, so mysterious, so provocative. There were countless techniques that Orson Welles used in that film that were the first of their kinds. Different uses of trick photography, etc. Also, the movie was one of the first films about filmmaking, although subtly. The beginning scenes with the "News on the March" bit echoes the actual news bytes that they showed before the films started. Citizen Kane was topical, experimental, and brilliant, and it has every right to be called the best.

On the other side, there's Plan 9 From Outer Space and Waterworld. Plan 9 was just poorly made, and spent most of the time trying to cover up the fact that bela lugosi had died, and they were using someone else to act in his scenes. There is stock footage, horrible script, awful special effects, and it was just garbage.

Waterworld, though, with SO MUCH money put into it only to deal with wooden dialogue, a meandering plot-line, and far too many instances that defy the laws of physics and logic to a point where no one can suspend disbelief for even a second. Pound for pound, this is the worst movie ever, as it was horrible with at least 1000 times the budget of Plan Nine.

Best comedy = Airplane!
Best standard film = Casablanca
Worst film = Mission Impossible (Only because it had practically nothing to do with Mission Impossible, as it was a generic action movie and Tom Cruise vehicle).

Best (in my opinion)- X-Files: Fight the Future
Worst- House of the Dead (I like all movies, but this one really sucked)

I'm a HUGE X-Files fan, so if you like that kind of stuff, the X-Files movie is something great to watch.

star wars was the best, and the worst would be Bruce Almighty. Jim carrey is awesome, but that movie is not his style.
