People are ignorant and don't understand anyone who is different from themselves. People are afraid of what they don't understand. It is also easier to just group people together by race and what they look like than to actually get to know the individual person. =(

well .I am ok with the fact that there are different races in the world with different culture and tradition. But the problem is that most of us are not good at mixing and matching. And by the way racism does not necessarily have to be based on colour alone. But dear we are human beings we always tend to find it easier to dislike difference than to use it to our advantage.

because humans are natural competitors so when the loser frequently lose they look for any reason why they lost. Color of skin is the most obvious excuse. If there were no guns, nukes, or mechanical weapons on this earth who would be the dominant race?

Didier, excellent question, but for such a simple question there evokes millenia of history, genetics, colour, creed, tribalism, politics, economics and psychology - just to name but a few of the relevant topics that MUST be addressed in any answer.
Because a proper Answer would and should be HUGE, lengthy, thorough and accurately truthful there's no chance of getting a good response on such a limited site as Yahoo! Answers.
So, I'm going to risk being reported for violating community guidelines of Y!A, and say that I cannot provide a simple, coherent answer and therefore advise you seek further education over years in an appropriate institution so you're more able and equipped to answer this one for yourself. And once you are so equipped - then ask questions of the 'racism subset'.
On a more personal note (which also attracts a Violation Notice from Yahoo), I love travelling abroad, meeting new people of the World and ensuring my contact is harmless, fun and sincere. Just ask Sunni Yuri bin Robin McKay of Malaysia, or his mother Dayang Anis binti Ali Ibrahim of Sabah on Borneo (of the Bajau tribe) who sat in a restaurant (ironically called One Plus One on Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur) one afternoon and put her bare arm next to mine and said, "Me coffee, you cream - our baby will be beautiful."
As we say in Scotland, "Ye just cannae whack that:)))"
Additional EDIT: Didier, please consider the Answer by hironymous as a potential "Best Answer". He's put things so concisely accurate (albeit limited) - he/she would get my vote.

I think people take their frustrations out on any person/race that they perhaps fear or envy or see as weaker and to be bullied. It is a transference of anger because they don't really like themselves and use someone else as a target. Alcohol/drugs may play a part in it too.

at what stage does having an opinion that other people don't agree on become racist? I find that defining racism is becoming very difficult, especially as in the town where I live we have 4 primary schools, one catholic, one welsh speaking, one English speaking, one grant/church maintained school. Is it racist to have so many faith schools? .

Just a question of power. People in power like the slaves to fight each other so they can remain in power. So they distribute the propaganda. Get rid of the ruling class and you will get rid of racism.

I would be surprised if there wasn't. It's the tribal thing, and suspicion of anything different. However, it is the most misused word on earth.

Insecurity, immaturity, and some were just simply raised that way. This is something for which I have no tolerance. There is just no justification for racism, in my humble opinion.
