Personally, I wouldn't shed a single tear if they suddenly all became extinct tomorrow. Esp. the ones bred to fight. (same goes for all the morons who train them for it)

But I do believe too much damage has been done to that breed now.

*Maybe* just keep the docile, good-natured ones & breed em w/ other nice ones....Maybe.

EDIT:

Bilinda G & another poster raises a scary issue of trusting them. I've heard my share of stories of even the nice ones suddenly turning.

I simply do not trust them. Like I said, too much damage has been done to the breed as a whole.

I think we should "start all over"...

I have a better Idea. Mix them with less violent breeds. I don't think ridding the world of them is the right approach

Ignorance breeds ignorance. People are ignorant of dogs in general. Why there are so many basic questions about them.
Pit bulls are no different. Some get them to look cool walking down the road. Some get them to fight. Which by the way one attacked one of our cow dogs and the oldest cow dog we had at the time almost killed it. The kid who owned this cool looking pit bull just sat there and watched as his dog was getting all bloody, it was pitiful!! Though he thought it was cool when his dog came onto our property to attack the younger of the two.
I have had my ear stitched up after being attacked by a pit, one of my sons had his wound on his stomach stitched up from a different pit bull getting him
This is the problem of the owners. Not the dog, a dog is a dog.
German Shepherds, Rotties, Australian Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs, Mastiffs, all have the reputations of being man eaters at one point or time. Now it is just the pit bull that is being the breed that is the horrible one. This will change yet again!
As I said ignorance breeds ignorance....If peeps were not so willing to pay money for these dogs from back yard breeders no more attacks. Pay no more then $100 bucks for one and never give a pit away. Cant afford a $100 bucks do not need any kind of dog. More then $100 bucks the breeder is looking for money! This of course does not mean the real breeders out there who show there dogs. Little rascals what do you think that dog is?? It is not mean in the show at all...

My dieing father loved his!! and trusted her to no end!

Obviously not every single pit bull is a dangerous dog, but in my opinion there has been a tendency toward ferocity bred into too many of them. I would not own one, nor suggest anyone else get one.

Once when I delivered newspapers for a living, I went toward a house to collect a bill. While I was still in the street, two pit bulls ran toward me from the yard. I had a very short period of time to determine their attitude. Fortunately I could tell from their ears and general body language that they just wanted to say hi, so I stood still and let them come jump up on me. I guarantee 100% -- if I had tried to run away from them the situation would have instantly changed and they would have bitten me. While this is true of many dogs, the majority of other types of dogs might nip a little or bite once or twice, the problem with the pit bull is that many of them under these circumstances would cause serious bodily harm to a person and possibly kill them.

My suggestion would be to ban breeding them and immediately destroy any that harm people.

you've got it all wrong. don't you watch cesar milan??? you can't damage an entire breed just because some dummies take a small percentage of the dog and breed them to fight. that doesn't change their DNA. i think they are beautiful dogs and if disciplined and treated correctly make wonderful pets. re: your last statement...temper is a major factor that a GOOD breeder takes into consideration when breeding 2 dogs...along with color/physique/health/etc...so basically there is nothing wrong with pit bulls. buy from a good breeder, get professional training for the dog and give it lots of love. in the words of cesar milan EXERCISE FIRST, THEN FOOD, THEN PLAY..AND IN THAT ORDER!! haha..

I believe that it is a major misconception that all pit bulls are vicious, ferocious, overly-aggressive animals. This is not true. It depends on HOW THEY ARE RAISED. Of course, if you have an owner that keeps the pit bull and raises it to be a killer...then the dog will demonstrate that kind of behavior. People need to quit blaming the dogs for this problem. They didn't do anything but what they were taught and what came to them by instinct. Instead, we need to make tougher laws for people that raise dogs in an effort to fight them. It is doing nothing helpful to society. It messes up the dogs' lives.

i'm sorry to assert i've got seen sooooo many irresponsible dogs vendors, i do unlike pits or any breed great adequate to do such severe injury while no longer knowledgeable properly. here contained regionally it truly is not that undesirable yet close to the place I paintings, approximately 0.5 the dogs vendors are careless, it truly is truly that undesirable... there's a leash regulation in result yet as quickly as I stroll or bicycle from the practice station to paintings & lower back, far maximum individuals enable their dogs run around loose, and whilst *some* of those dogs will come while stated as, diverse them do no longer. some have even chased me or snapped at me devoid of any provocation (no longer even the heady scent of outrage -numerous I hadn't seen till they have been coming at me growling & barking). i realize it truly is the vendors' fault and not the dogs', besides the undeniable fact that with those numbers of irresponsible vendors, I dislike something enormous & stable, the threat of them ending up w/the incorrect vendors is in simple terms too super!

It all depends on the trainer so they all shouldn't become excint. If you are born seeing movies that someone always kills someone else, when you grow up, you won't think it's bad. Its the same with pitbulls. If they are bred to be mean, they are gonna act mean. All dogs are that way, even the cutest of dogs. If they are bred mean, they will act mean. In conclusion, pitbulls should not be banned because its not their fault. I LOVE PITBULLS!

I actually love pit bulls have had 2 pure breads and one Shepard pit mix. they are like ant other dog if you treat them with love from birth they are good loving pets. It is so sad that people breed them to fight it is not the fault of the dogs but the horrible people that find sport from watching dogs fight to their death. One we had years ago my then boyfriend tried to make him fight but he was my baby and did not want to but would so I sneaked him away and gave him to a person with a fenced in yard that took very good care of him. he never did find out what happened to money I said probably someone stole him or he ran away when he was outside. Meistro we got the same way a lady's husband was going to raise him to fight they owned a store and when my son was there she told him to take the puppy home we had him for 6 months and he caught parvo and died he was very strong and a very very fast runner and the biggest baby he had to sleep in the bed with someone. Shadow our Shepard pit mix we had for 10 years she was a big baby but very protective she once treed my husbands brother who came in our back yard when we were not home she was on a chain but in the garage she could go outside in the house or the garage. She broke her chain to get to him and someone called 911 as he was in the trree yelling for help the police almost shot her as they said she would not let them in the yard. Our neighbor said she ran back and forth from the tree to the gate I still laugh at that picture in my mind. Animal control came the lady said she walked up to shadow said come on and shadow allowed her to close her in the garage we got a ticket but it was dropped as they said she was protecting the property. sorry to be so long but just wanted to let you know all pits are not the same and it is so sad that so much bad happens to them thank you and this is my very long answer to your question bless you

I'm not a huge dog fan; but my husband has had our pitbull for 7 years and he gets chased by cats...he is one of the most passive animals I have ever encountered and for a pet; he's got an awesome personality...very obedient !

But it doesn't bother me that people can't breed them anymore; because too many people don't have common sense and they don't train pitbulls in the right manner or abide by the outlined laws.

I had a real docile one, She was good with kids but she just didn't like other animals. we went away for the weekend and she killed three cows. We figured it was a coyote or something, then one night we heard some strange noises and caught her in the act. It was really sad because she was so good around other people. Never growled or barked. I think its a lost cause. They can still turn even though they have been treated with love and kindness.
