Figure skating or gymnastics? I've been in gymnastics for a year and it looks like I'm not very talented in it. I loved gymnastics, but since I've watched people ice skate, I really wanted to do it. i can't do both. gymnatsics looks fun when you do the flips and stuff, but figure skating looks so graceful......Which should I do? Give me an answer and explanation why please. I really want to do ONE of these sports, but I dont know which. =(

Gymnastics...but that's coming from a gymnast...:)

I presume you're in artistic gymnastics. Maybe if you want to be more graceful you might want to look into rhythmic gymnastics...but...that's coming from a rhythmic gymnast...

Um, so to answer you. Try to make a list of things that you're best at. Are you strong, flexible, and adaptable? Gymnastics. If you have really good balance, good at skating, flexible, and have good amplitude in your jumps (balance also comes into play when landing), have money...(ice-skating is expensive)...maybe you should look into ice-skating. Another thing to consider is the enviorment, coaches, and girls on your team.

I can speak from the figure skating side. I started in the 5th grade and quit after the 10th grade. During those 6 years, I went from public lessons, to private, 6 days per week, coach & choregrapher, etc. It IS a very expensive sport if you are lucky enough to move beyond the "general public" category. Skates are normally $500 and up. Outfits (I never purchased the extremely fancy ones) are spendy. Ice time is ~$10/hour depending on the club and area of the country you are in. And your pro gets probably $20-$30/half hour. And taking into consideration the dedicated skaters probably skate 2-4 hours per day with 3-5 1/2 hour lessons per week. So that's what you potentially get into....but if you want to just do it recreationally and see where it goes (yes, you are a bit old to become truly competitive - Tara L. and Michelle K. were both 12-14 when they were hitting the national/international scene), there is nothing holding you back. I recently went back and did 1 lesson per week and 2 hours of sessions per week and had a lot of fun.

I've heard figure skating takes lots of money to learn, the outfits alone are very expensive. They all start at a younger age than you too. It's also important to be very athletic and very attractive as well. Most of the champion skates are cute. If you have all of these things, consider ice skating. If not, consider soccer, the USA women team and some of the best in the world, and you can make the team with hard work and skill.
