Much like you I was very unaware that there was so much racism out there particularly to my race. I mean I was aware of racism but it was not something I faced daily. On yahoo there is a question regarding race every five minutes. I think people use this arena to hide behind a fake name and picture and say things that they would not be brave to say to anyone face. I listen to the generalizations, the stereotyping, and just the over-all misinterpretation of a entire race. Some of the things they say black people are suppose to do I have never seen anyone black I know participate in that action. Would I not noticed some of those sterotypes in my family, friends, neighboro, church members or someone that is in the same race as me. It's a hateful and small minded world. But I choose to be a part of the solutions and never the problems.

I do not think the amount of race related discussions is at all disturbing. What you are seeing is merely the result of a lack of dialogue in the "real" world.
We must face it, race and race related issues/questions are a very real part of our lives and our world. Unfortunately it has become verboten to discuss these topics lest someone gets their feelings hurt. Hurt feelings are a part of life.
The Internet allows an open forum for persons to express what they may actually think but are prohibited, or intimated to not to, express in real face to face discussions in their communities. The Internet allows a place to vent these feelings and frustrations and to raise perfectly valid questions and points.
I think people have a legitimate right to say what they think in regard to racial issues.
Political correctness is a terrible thing when it is used to spare someones feelings by muzzling another persons right to hold an opinion.

It's a very good thing, we need to know what people are really thinking.
A lot of people pretend to be non discriminatory while secretly practicing racism.
Now you know the specter is alive and well, just hidden behind a wall of political correctness.
Racism is a world plague affecting every continent, If its not color, its country or religion or some other excuse to hate. It is not going away. I prefer it in my face so i can deal with it, not skulking around behind my back.
Do not fall into a false sense of security, others have and been slaughtered. Rwanda, Kosovo, Dafur, Palestine to name but a few.

average Joe + anonymity (like that found online) + an audience = Joe the ***hole
Basically, there's a lot of people online that are mean because they can get away with it easier. If ya want to be online, you've either got to learn to ignore hateful people or find sites that actually do a good job monitoring their site.

I whole-heartedly agree. But let's not be naive. Racism is an ongoing problem, and we who object to racism must remain committed to speaking up against it whenever we find it. I am glad you wrote this question here, and I hope you will continue to raise your voice against racism every time you encounter it.

I kind of think that most people are kind of used to it. That is, yes, systematic oppression blows. Yes, overt instances of racism also blow. But people are skanks on the internet, so you either ignore them, or else laugh at their stupidity.
