Yes we need boundaries and talking does not always work. If a man was about to attack a Lady in the street, would you use physical force or try to reason with them that their course of action was not right?. You can not reason with everything and sometimes by smacking and correcting you can save the life of a child later in life. I think that the problem these days is that we think we can reason with evil, this is not so.
Social Workers advocate NOT HITTING as they do not understand the fuller implications of the Social context of discipline and merely focus on the feelings of the child involved and not the wider community that hopefully they will be of benefit later in life, they are of the here and now society that I do not subscribe to. I do not advocate smacking as a matter of course but as a reservation and right of parental authority and responsible Parenting. Most Parents I have heard who say NO to smacking have the very Children most in need of a firm hand and guidance of which they are clearly lacking.

Yes, my parents spanked me as a child and yes, it does help me as an adult. Those spankings still make me think before I do something outrageous . . .

Hell yes I am. My momma spanked me for all of my wongdoings all the time. I was a horrible child. I know this.... I'm a better adult because my momma made me a better adult. I was a klepto, I blew up cats butts, I mouthed off, for all of this, I got what was coming to me.

I don't think so. I was spanked and it made me very angry. It didn't teach me any lessen other than it was ok to hit when a big person was mad at me.
I think spanking should only be used if a child is doing something that could endanger their life.

My mother has hit us with a red willow stick and it cut Thur your skin, just for being late from school. it made me scared of her. i don't think we ever got a normal spanking, what ever that is.....I'm sorry to say what i do remember, i don't respect it as an adult.....I DID NOT spank or slap my children....they love me and respect me and i feel that from them..... there are so many OTHER things that can be done than hitting. that made made a better person...

Hitting is not discipline. It teaches nothing. The need to spank is the excuse of the inadequate parent.

I can't say "better", but it taught me not to spank my kids unless absolutely necessary. I can count on one hand how many times I have spanked my kids.

yes! I thank all walmarts and fast food chains should have an announcement every half an hour to remind all parents to spank their kids rather they need it or not.

I guess, I still respect authority.
I don't try blaming everyone else for something I have done.
I can accept responsibility.
I'm moving right along in this life!
