I've decided I want to become a teacher, which I didn't clearly ask the correct question to, so here it goes: My scenario begins that I am a college junior upon the arrival of what would be considered my "specialized" classes (I.E. Major). I have no idea what I really want to teach, because I made alright marks (-A) in most of my classes (ranging from Comp/Anatomy and Physio/College Algebra). I understand that Math/Science is in demand. Some of my friends say that it would be more rewarding to me to major in English. My mother and father say that I would do great in Science. I tutored several classmates in Coll. Algebra and they said I would do great at that.

Any suggestions?

Sorry to ask you a question back, but what is your passion? What do you enjoy the most? If you are well rounded and you want to teach in elementary classes, then you can major in Liberal Studies, a precursor for a teaching credential. You can always major in one area and minor in another, thus allowing you to teach more than one subject. Whatever you decied, remember that you can always continue your education and make changes later. This is very common in the teaching field.

I would go with what you really enjoy because an awful lot of teaching is being able to SELL the material to students. You have to show enthusiasm and excitement in order for students to get into the material. However, it IS true that science and math teahcers are in HIGH demand.

Go for Math. Teachers here are very rare species. Employment wise, it is in demand anywhere in the globe, and what is important is that it seems Math is where your heart is. Select the subject that you enjoy teaching. Remember, you will be doing this for most of your working years, so you must love what you do.

First of all, congratulations on wanting to invest in a career in teaching. Next you need to possess three basic qualities: a love of learning, a tremendous amount of patience, and a willingness to work overtime. Decide if you want to teach elementary, middle school or high school. If you want to teach elementary, you will need to major in some form of childhood education-early childhood, elementary, etc. If you want to teach middle or high school, you need to major in a specific subject like History, Math, English, etc. I have taught high school for 10 years and I like the kids at that age, but it's not for everyone. English teachers have a tremendous amount of paperwork and all high school teachers tend to have larger classes. Investigate the programs in your state and try to do some observations in real classrooms.
