Now surely if i was going to hike about town or the net checking whether somewhere sells this item cheaper, I'd do it before coming in here to buy it and not afterwards like some sort of tw@t.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

After many years working in retail and particulally electrical, price promises do have a point for the customer and the retailer.

Most decent retailers will match the price of a product as long as it's exactly the same product, and even where (and here's where YOU win) they offer better servicing, free delivery, free installation, free accessories, better customer care, cheaper extended guarentees, etc, etc etc.

So you get the best price AND you can chose who will give you the best package and who you want to give you money to.
For example, PC World may be the best price but you might hate their guts after bad service in the past so you can take that price point and spend your money elsewhere.

From the retailers point of view, they want to keep your busines because it's much easier to keep a customer than to get a new one.

Secondly, retailers DO NOT all pay the same for products, some make a huge margin compared to others just like supermarkets against the corner shop.
Companies do better deals with bigger retailers so it's impossible for a shop to know what everyone else is doing and what price the latest 'XYZ' is.

Want an example? We used to sell a Flymo mower of a particular model and found out B&Q were selling them £4 cheaper than WHAT WE PAID!!! So, for everyone we sold we actually made a loss of £4 and that's not taking into account all other costs.
The price wasn't advertised anywhere, it was in store only and kept quiet because they knew every other retailer would kick off to Flymo about the price B&Q were paying.

So, only through price promises can you get the best deal, with the best retailers and you get to chose where you spend your money.
Let's hope we all do that to keep some of the smaller companies in business rather than just the big boys.
