Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, JD Robb's IN DEATH series, Dana Stabenow, Carol O'Connell, Sue Grafton's alphabet series (A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar, etc.), Patricia Cornwell, Charlaine Harris (various series), Linda Barnes, PJ Tracey. All of these authors have very good books with female leads. Some are lighter, some are more darker but they are all very good.

A recent book is Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles. It's been out for a few years but really worth seeking out. It came out about the same time as Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier and tells a similar story of a Civil War journey back through troubled lands to find oneself and return to love. In this book the primary character is a woman and she is traveling through a border state, Missouri, where friends and foes are always shifting for political reasons. I think it's better than Cold Mountain, particularly for giving you the sense of what it must have felt like to live in those times and such a place. And the language is gorgeously lyrical.

i would recommend The Devil In The White City.. unfortunately it doesn't have a woman hero or any hero for that matter but it's a true murder story and it's very interesting. however if you want to read a book about a woman, i would recommend Helen Keller or Carol Everett who is a former abortionist or rosa parks or Gianna Jennssen or is an abortion survivor or anne frank. or read about Queen Esther in the old testament... now she was a hero!

Any of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich - hysterically funny and action-packed!
The Anita Blake series of books by Laurel K. Hamilton are fun, too (if you like paranormal stuff with a lot of gore!). I liked the early ones in the series best.

Almost anything by Tamora Pierce, definitely. I would especially recommend her Trickster's Choice/Trickster's Queen duology.
Melissa Scott is another one with women as heroines. Night Sky Mine and Burning Bright are two books that have good solid female protagonists. Warning: Melissa's works do have characters with same-sex relationships in case you're turned off by that type of thing. But the books stand by themselves without that particular aspect.

Try Nevada Barr's mysteries. She writes about Anna Pigeon, who is a park ranger. Each of the books take place in a different national park. "Track of the Cat" is the first one, but you don't have to read them in order. They are excellent, and very hard to put down when you start them!
